DKW Rotary As the 1970s dawned, it seemed just about every major manufacturer was either working on or thinking about producing a motorcycle powered by a variation of the NSU/Wankel rotary engine. Honda built and tested a prototype, named the CRX, Kawasaki came up with the X-99 and built several ‘mules’, while Yamaha went even further and publicly released the twin-rotor RZ-201 at the 1972 Tokyo Motor Show. DKW Rotary started and ridden for the first time since 1974, Perth Western Australia Other manufacturers whose bikes reached production include; DKW, Norton and Van Veen (who used a derivative of the NSU/Audi engines developed for Citroën). Hercules also produced a Wankel engine motorcycle, the Hercules W-2000, that was the first rotary-powered motorcycle. The Wankel engine was based on a Sachs air-cooled rotary used in the German-built DKW/Hercules model W2000. A final agreement with Audi/NSU to market the rotary engine in a production motorcycle was signed in August of 1972, and the project survived the absorption of the Norton Villiers Group into Triumph/BSA in 1973. A prototype was first shown in 1970 at the West Cologne Autumn Motorcycle Show to a mixed reception and the production bike was sold as a Hercules product except in the United Kingdom, where it was marketed as a DKW motorcycle.
